Students who have successfully completed the seminar will be able to interrogate corpora in their respective foreign language as well as learner corpora for didactic (contrastive) questions as well as to use corpora for the creation of didactic materials.

The application of corpus linguistics in the planning of language didactic interventions supports an important desideratum of subject didactic research: the pursuit of the empirically based research principle. Thanks to corpus linguistic basic research, quantitative analysis of learner languages or sectorial languages in L1, as well as contrastive L1/L2 quantitative analysis are possible. As a result, planning of interventions, creation of materials, and design of curricula are not only supported by subjective experiences of practitioners, but can also be guided by quantitative evidence. Advances in corpus linguistics have also contributed to innovations on teaching/learning metrics: in recent years, corpora have been increasingly created, reducing the technological threshold and enabling their use by teachers in didactic practice with little prior knowledge. The use of large and authentic linguistic datasets from the direct hands of learners (web-based or paper-based) supports learning through inductive hermeneutic processes. The resulting didactic method DDL (Data Driven Learning) is the contemporary development of a trend in didactics, whose path was blazed by constructivist pedagogy, in which the focus is on the autonomy of the teacher and the activation of inductive and personalized learning processes. The fields of application of corpora in foreign language didactics extend from the teacher/learner on a lexical and phraseological level, to a textual and pragmatic level. Moreover, the use of (parallel) corpora can go beyond the boundaries of the foreign language and promote multilingual-sensitive foreign language didactics as well as language comparisons between the L1 and L2. A contrastive language comparison between, for example, German and a Romance language, can increase reflective capacity and learning yield and enable students not to work with preconceived rules but to construct their knowledge empirically with data. In order to pursue the comparative linguistic perspective, the seminar will be conducted in a module with a parallel course in German Studies (Ass.Prof. Cordula Meißner). In this module, students of a Romance foreign language will

work on a corpus linguistic question with students of German Studies in an interdisciplinary way and incorporate their respective competences in a group-led research project. A thorough knowledge of the potential and limits of corpora and their application significantly enriches the competence portfolio of prospective teachers of a foreign language.

This course is part of Elective Module (“Interdisziplinäre Kompetenzen”) Master's Programme Secondary School Teacher Training (General Education) Subject Unterrichtsfach Französisch,  Italienisch,  Spanisch.
