In the 17th and 18th centuries, all the sovereigns of the Holy Roman Empire considerably extended their residences, promoted the arts and completed the palace buildings with gardens. A particularly famous representative of the princely Baroque was Frederick the Great's sister Wilhelmine, who was married to the Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth. The excursion will be devoted to several of the pleasure palaces and garden grounds she built, as well as the Bayreuth Opera House, one of the few original 18th-century buildings still standing in Europe. We will ask what the functions of the palaces and gardens were at a princely court and what significance was attached to their forms and uses.
The excursion will probably take place in July 2023 and will be mostly in Upper Franconia (Germany, Bavaria).
