Erkennen der Interdependenzen zwischen historischer Mikro- und Makroperspektive und der spezifischen Relevanz kleinräumiger Sicht von Geschichte mit ihren besonderen Fragestellungen und Erkenntnischancen.

  • Students will read primary sources. Assessment may be made via in-class presentations and debates and group exercises.
  • Students will learn how to approach historical events and how historical problems influence today’s world. The history and historiography of the Ottoman Empire introduce a myriad of opportunities in that regard. Assessments will be made via written assignments and in-class discussions.
  • Students will develop a thorough understanding of the Ottoman Empire and the Middle East and gain analytical and critical skills. Students will gain an understanding of the emergence and formation of the Ottoman imperial structure, the transition from empire to nation-states in the late empire as modern ideas slowly diffused into imperial lands via conquest-colonialism of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the causes and consequences of World War I. Assessment will be made via exams.

This course will introduce students to the history of the Ottoman Empire that once directly ruled or collected tax from a territory extending from today's Morocco to Caucasia and from Western Slovakia to Yemen. It is often reiterated by a global community of scholars that the political, socio-cultural, and economic conditions in today's Balkans and the Middle East cannot be understood without examining the Ottoman past. In this course students will read, learn, and discuss many important aspects of Ottoman history which substantially influenced the modern histories of Southeastern Europe and the Middle East. Throughout the semester, special attention will be paid to encounters and exchanges between the Ottoman Empire and Habsburg Monarchy through lectures specifically devoted to this topic.

This course aims to fulfill several goals: First is a broad introduction to Ottoman history with an emphasis on political, social, and cultural aspects of the empire’s history. Second, the course goes beyond being a linear narrative of historical chronology by also examining Ottoman studies as a discipline and research field. To that purpose, students will be assigned historiographical articles and primary sources. Third, the present-day memory of the Ottoman Empire in the former Ottoman world will be discussed with special emphasis on the Balkans and Southeastern Europe. To this day, the Ottoman legacy continues to shape national debates in this geography. Finally, in order to make this class more relevant to a Western audience, the course will especially highlight connections between Europe and the Ottoman world with frequent references to Ottoman-Habsburg encounters, in particular, diplomatic contacts.

Weekly lectures will be supported by visually rich Prezi slides to increase the memorability of the course’s content for a student group who may be listening to a course on the Ottoman Empire for the first time. Throughout the semester, students will have access to the lectures via fixed links. All key concepts and terms will be recorded in the slides.

Short Übungen throughout the semester + written fınal exam at the end of the semester
