French historian Pierre Nora coined the term "place of memory" in historical studies. "Les lieux de mémoire" can be material places of memory (e.g. cities, buildings, monuments) or places of memory in a figurative sense (e.g. historical events, personalities, institutions, books). In this course we want to look at places of remembrance from the Middle Ages to the 20th century of the historical county of Tyrol, the province of South Tyrol and the county of Tyrol. The discussion will not focus on the building or political history around the place of remembrance, but on the subjective perception of the past in an individual context or in a group context. We thus pursue the question, which places of remembrance of Tyrolean history have manifested themselves in the individual memory or in the collective memory.
Theme centered inputs and reading, discussions and oral presentations (partly at the places of remembrance).
Active participation, reading, short exercises, presentation, written final paper.
Will be made available at the beginning of the semester via OpenOlat
We will visit central places of remembrance of Tyrolean history in the Innsbruck area.
