The development of tourism in the Eastern Alps with technical infrastructure began at the latest in the middle of the 19th century. Initially it was the construction of roads and railways that made the Alps much easier to reach from the large urban centres of Europe, but soon it was also the local facilities that made access to and a stay in the Alps comfortable and sometimes eventful. The Alpine associations make a significant contribution here, for example, through their construction of paths and mountain huts. However, with the turn of the 20th century – and accelerated by the technical experiences of the First World War – a new phase of infrastructure construction began. Now it is a matter of exploring the vertical by using technical climbing assistance. The possibilities before the First World War initially seemed almost limitless and, despite the economic crisis during the inter-war period, increased, especially in Tyrol.
The seminar focuses on the intensive examination of the construction of the Innsbruck Nordkettenbahn at the end of the 1920s. For this purpose, exclusive records of the city archive will be consulted and worked on in a joint discussion of the topic. The aim of the course is not only to obtain an initial overview of the archive collections, but in a second step to formulate topics from them and to work out minor questions, to subsequently write them down and to present the results obtained.
