The students get to know an example of a current local activist initiative. The students reflect on their own positions on the field using the example of activism research against the background of their own cultural studies analysis.

The aim of this one-day excursion is to visit an initiative in Innsbruck. We will approach the field through participant observation and conversations with the activists in small groups. We will gain insight into the protest practices, forms of communication, structures of a local movement and current challenges that the activists are confronted with, among other things, due to COVID-19. How can motivation be maintained and how can activism be made sustainable in the pandemic situation?

Preliminary discussion, participant observation, co-discussion, written reflection.

1. participation in a preliminary meeting. There we will discuss which activist initiatives are eligible and talk about organisation and scheduling possibilities. The preliminary meeting will take place on Monday, 13 March, 14:15-15:45 online on BBB. Link will follow via email.
2. participation in the excursion
3. after the field trip, submit a 5-page field trip report focusing on a selected aspect of the visit and discussing it analytically.
