645617 VU Modernisation and Mediality: Life story telling and the qualitative interview in practice
summer semester 2023 | Last update: 06.02.2023 | Place course on memo listStudents gain an insight into the theory and practice of interviewing. In the course of two visits to institutions where interviews are specifically used as research methods in the field of interculturality, the students deepen their insights into the opportunities and challenges of qualitative interviewing and finally implement what they have learned in the form of their own interview.
The qualitative/life history interview method is firmly established in the social and cultural sciences and has a long tradition. In addition to studies on life-world aspects, biographical surveys on life-historical excerpts, and complex micro-studies such as investigations in social or ethnic milieus, interviews are now an indispensable research technique in the historical and cultural sciences. With regard to the subject area of interculturality, qualitative interviews play a special role. They prove to be particularly valuable in research questions around a social history of everyday life, in the investigation of subjective perceptions and experiences, and not least in the possibility of democratising historiography. More than the technique, the change of perspective is at the centre of research with this method. Tyrolean examples in this context are the projects "Memory Cultures" and the "Documentation Archive Migration", which were also thematised in museums. A visit to both the Centre for Migrants in Tyrol and the Museum of Peoples in Schwaz is therefore an important part of the course, as is the initiation, implementation and reflection of one's own interview.
In this exercise (UE), students receive an introduction to the history and practice of interviewing. In the course of two field trips, the application of the theory in the practice of renowned institutions is presented. At the same time, the students conduct interviews themselves and present both the interviews and the reflection on the experiences made together.
Course-related: Attendance, active participation in the discussions, conducting and presenting one's own interview as well as reflecting on one's own interview conduct.
