At the end of this course the students should have understood basic concepts of astronomical observations and astronomical instrumentation.
They should have obtained a basic understanding regarding astronomical data reduction and analysis techniques (photometry and spectroscopy).
Weather permitting, they should have used their own observations to constrain the properties of cosmic objects.
In this excursion we will visit the Asiago Astrophysical Observatory in Italy, which is operated by the University of Padua.
At night we will conduct astronomical observations if the weather is good.
In addition to imaging and visual observations, which we plan to conduct with a smaller telescope,
we will also be able to study fainter and more distant astronomical objects (e.g. galaxies and quasars) spectroscopically using the large 122 cm telescope.
During day time we will learn more about the local astronomical instrumentation and get an introduction into astronomical data reduction and analysis techniques.
These will be applied to the newly obtained data (or archival data in the case of poor weather).
The students will summarize the observations, data analyses, and obtained results in written reports.
In advance of the excursion we will have a block lecture summarizing relevant basics of astronomical observations.
Course examination according to § 7, statute section on "study-law regulations".
Frederick R. Chromey: To Measure the Sky: An Introduction to Observational Astronomy
Astronomical or astrophysical introduction lecture (Introduction to astronomy 1+2 or Astrophysics 1 or Astronomy and Astrophysics).
The preliminary dates for the excursion are April 12-15, 2023.
