Programming is an essential part of research in astrophysics that can be used for a variety of tasks ranging from the reduction and analysis of data to the graphical presentation of the results. This course consists of a series of practical exercises in the Python programming language using modern software tools to conduct research in astrophysics. Python is a powerful scientific and computational environment that is perfect for astronomers, in particular due to specific packages such as the graphical library matplotlib and the numerical libraries numpy and astropy. For the second part of the course, the students apply what they have learned to a project in astrophysics of their choosing and present it in front of the class.

An understanding of how to use the Jupyter Notebook environment and the main Python libraries for research problems in astrophysics. A broad knowledge of the modern software tools applied to a variety of astrophysical datasets, ranging from astronomical images to spectroscopic data and integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data cubes.
