800998 SE Power and Subjectivation
summer semester 2023 | Last update: 22.05.2023 | Place course on memo listStudents will learn about selected theories and approaches on subjectivation. They will in particular learn about intersectional debates about power and subjectivation. They are encouraged to link the debates on subjectivation to their current research projects (MA-thesis or dissertation).
The concept ‘subjectivation’ has become a core concept in social sciences, humanities, Gender Studies, Queer Studies, as well as Disability Studies. It helps us to clarify how power operates by constituting bodies and subjects and to understand how power materializes in a bodily and psychic way. It allows us to grasp how social systems like patriarchy, heteronormativity, colonialism, ableism, and capitalism require every-day-practices of subjectivation and are therefore deeply – albeit differently – inscribed in subjects.
From an intersectionality perspective, it is crucial, to theorize the relation between power and subjectivation with a lens that allows us to capture the multiple modes how power is inscribed in individuals, and that allows us to put the various modes of interpellation in relationship to each other.
