The students are able to master integrative design and planning tasks. They can independently and in a reflective manner formulate an architectural concept, link it to the discourse and implement it on different scales. They have specific methodological knowledge and skills in integrating aesthetic, functional, programmatic, urban, typological, technical and ecological aspects.

The social changes brought about by globalisation, digitalisation and emancipation are also having an impact on our education system. Learning in the 21st century relies on free and open learning in flexible spaces that can be designed and individually changed by the schoolchildren themselves. Architecture and pedagogy form a symbiosis in which pupils learn to think self-confidently and critically.

When, how and where does one learn? And why? Why is the design of (learning) space important? How does space change the way we feel, act and behave? The space as a third educator - how can this be realised?

In this design project, we deal with (learning) spaces and the social developments in architecture and space production in interaction with social, cultural and societal sustainability and develop individual space programmes and new, visionary school concepts through participatory processes.

We are working with an existing primary school in Nals in South Tyrol. The school aims to give pupils more responsibility for their learning, but also to help them develop the skills they need to continue their education independently. To achieve this, the school is to become a kind of learning environment that offers different learning opportunities. Frontal teaching is to be reduced and instead teaching forms are to be used in which the students work actively and independently. In order to implement this new learning in the classroom, all aspects of the school system need to be considered and, if necessary, changed. In exchange with speakers from the school and the community, we are creating a vision of the future primary school in Nals.

We work with the children and adults from the school as well as from the community to explore their visions, wishes and needs in order to create new (learning) spaces.

During the two semesters we participate in online meetings, hold discussions, present our work virtually and in real life, work actively with users on site, build prototypes, design an exhibition and finally present our work to a wide audience in the community.


The weekly schedule is always Wednesdays from 9am at the Institute. An on-site workshop will take place from 29- 31 March.
