847388 EP Design Studio 2
summer semester 2023 | Last update: 03.02.2023 | Place course on memo listIn this design studio, students will obtain and deepen their knowledge and experience with contemporary and advanced urban and architectural digital design processes. Successful students will organize, conceptualize, and develop their design thesis within a given design brief, taking their project through all design stages from early research to representational drawings and models to present their final design to their peers, invited jurors and a public audience.
EDUCATIONAL ENTROPIES : NEW SPACES FOR SCIENTIFIC PRACTICE
The topic of this semester’s master design studio is to explore novel spaces for scientific and educational practice. Today, the performance of high-quality research has become more important and recognized than ever, helping to tackle the big issues of our time, from climate change to human health.
At the same time, the free practice of science and education is endangered by political and social agendas, questioning its values and merits, resulting in the need to strengthen and manifest its position on contemporary society.
We as architects are called to provide the framing to strengthen scientific work and knowledge transfer by designing high-quality spaces, in which scientists, educators and students can work, evolve and collaborate by exchanging thoughts, information, and ideas.
In this studio we will look into new concepts and typologies for university buildings, schools, laboratories and other learning facilities, that focus on connectivity, for one, optimising communication within the scientific community, but also enhancing the connection between science and society.
Students will develop individual strategies and architectural concepts by using novel digital and analogue design tools. The goal of the studio is to design contemporary educational buildings based on spatial, programmatic and geometric explorations, with a special focus on volumetric design. Architectural concepts and spatial prototypes will be contextualised on a specific site in the inner-alpine city of Innsbruck.
Students will work in groups to present and discuss their material once a week in a desk crit or PowerPoint presentation. Work includes research, analysis, and synthesis in order to deduct and organize one's ideas to form a coherent architectural proposal. Design research is conducted via digital and physical models.
Students' progress on research, model building, digital modelling skills and design will be evaluated week by week, putting the focus on specific milestones, such as quarter review (end of research phase) and miterm review. Students will present their final design to a jury at the end of the year and submit this digital presentation for grading. Final Grading will assess the quantity and quality of presentation, design, research, and models.
Course examination according to § 7, statute section on "study-law regulations".
Weekly reading lists will be provided.
