Exploring the Potential of Escher's Surface Tessellation and Ceramics 3D Printing in Architecture
The Metamorphosis, a technique introduced by M.C. Escher, is a type of periodic 2D surface tessellation that has greatly influenced the field of mathematics, art, and design. Escher's work demonstrated how tessellated patterns can create intricate and visually stunning images that are mathematically precise and aesthetically pleasing.
The potential of combining Escher's approach to surface tessellation with the advancements in ceramics 3D printing has generated new possibilities for the creation of complex 3D structures. This method of combining mathematical function and aesthetic design allows for the creation of novel 3D surfaces that incorporate interlocking patterns, resulting in an interplay between form and function.
Objective: To familiarize students with the concept of periodic 2D surface tessellation and the potential of ceramics 3D printing in creating complex 3D structures, and to encourage them to experiment with these techniques in their own designs.
