In an open design process, we develop methods and techniques for analysis and interpretation.  These enable us to translate productively between different media (digital / physical).

A delve into 3D scanning of objects and the potential of point clouds form the basis for moving from a physical sketch-model to digital study-models to speculative architecture. We are guided by the question how digital technologies can open up new ways of materialization and tectonics.

Furthermore, in this context, we want to introduce AR (Augmented Reality) into the design process. AR helps us navigate between digital and physical spaces and structures. To explore the potential of AR, we will use the Institute's HoloLens2. It will serve as an interactive tool and support us in developing innovative ways of visualizing, reading and translating relationships between space, structure, and material.

Interdependent relationships between various (design-) techniques are an essential component of the design methodology in the Studio Hochbau (Karolin Schmidbaur). This seminar explores design-methods that make use of a recurring shift of one’s  perspective as a iterative renewal of an (original) idea. We lay focus on conceptionally utilizing the potential of ambiguity which is present at the interface between digital and analog states of a work.

Following techniques are mainly utilized:

·         3D scanning (scanner of the institute)

·         Working with point clouds

·         AR Applications (Hololens 2, Fologram)

·         Experimental model construction, analogue and digital

Evaluation based on regular written and/or oral contributions from participants.

Course examination according to § 7, statute section on "study-law regulations".

Will be discussed in the first lesson.

Good knowledge of 3D modeling software

The implementation of the course in presence or virtual form is subject to the general provisions. Details will be communicated at the beginning of the course.
