202112 VO Philosophy of Science
winter semester 2023/2024 | Last update: 27.09.2023 | Place course on memo listUnderstanding of what science is, why it is valuable, and how to think critically about it.
The sciences enjoy an elevated social status as a source of knowledge, and are deeply embedded in our understanding of the world. Do the sciences deserve this status, and if so, why? What are the sciences anyway, and why do we engage in them? In this class we will discuss these and other questions that are crucial for anyone who is in any way touched by the sciences – from students to experienced academics, as well as anyone who ever seeks out medical advice. We will discuss a number of important intellectual developments in the natural sciences, but we will also discuss how disciplines, not least the social sciences and the humanities, deliver important insights. Particularly in our age of conspiracy theories and so-called fake news, it is increasingly important to cultivate a critical and informed understanding of the nature and role of the sciences.
