222602 VU Individual Questions in Dogmatic Theology: Augustine - teacher of grace or "logician of terror"?
winter semester 2023/2024 | Last update: 19.03.2024 | Place course on memo listInsight into the central positions and concerns of Augustine’s early to middle theology of grace, as well as the predestination statements in Romans 9-11. From this an understanding of the central problems of grace and freedom, original sin and predestination in their context will be developed.
In 397, 14 years before he began his controversies with Pelagius, Augustine radically changed his previous theology on predestination and original sin, grace and freedom, anticipating later extreme positions. The occasion for this theological change was a request from his former mentor and friend Simplician concerning some difficult biblical texts, especially from the 9th chapter of Romans, which he answered with the book „To Simplician“.
In the course we will read and discuss the theologically central and controversial part 1,2 and deal with the theological issues of Rom 9, predestination and original sin, grace and freedom, which are closely related in Augustine's Simplicians.
Own preparatory reading of chapters from Augustine's "To Simplician". Joint discussion of the texts and related theological questions in the course. Writing smaller papers on selected questions, which are discussed together in the course.
Written and oral exam.
