404056 VU Economic Policy: Migration Economy
winter semester 2023/2024 | Last update: 15.06.2023 | Place course on memo listStudents will be familiar with the theoretical models, empirical methods, and findings at the frontier of the economic analysis of migration.
Migration has been at the heart of many public debates in recent years: while some point out the benefits of migration and call for more open borders, others consider migrants as a burden for hosting societies and want to build walls to stop migration flows. Economists can contribute many insights to these debates, and the study of migration has become one of the most vibrant fields.
We will in particular shed light on the following questions:
- Who migrates and why do people move?
- Which areas do migrants leave from and where do they move to?
- What are the economic impacts of migration? On the source societies? On the hosting societies?
- How do migrants assimilate in hosting societies?
- What are the implications of migration policy?
Lecture, problem sets, disccussions
Take-home exam, written final exam
All literature will be distributed in class
Students should have a good background in microeconomic theory of supply and demand. Knowledge of econometrics (and/or interest in empirical methods) is an advantage.
