A sound understanding of social realities requires theory and empiricism. Theory and empirical data are closely related - even if institutional divisions between chairs and within professional societies often do not suggest this:

On the one hand, empirical social research can meaningfully be conducted only on the basis of theoretical approaches to social realities. On the other hand, empirical research serves to test, redefine and develop theory.

In this seminar, we will explore the interconnections between theory and empirical data in sociological research. To this end, we will (1) conceptualize types of linkages between theory and empiricism, (2) extract theoretical concepts from existing empirical research, and, building on this, (3) develop theoretically informed qualitative-empirical research designs.
