The lecture provides an overview on world economic and social history from a global historical perspective. Departing from a critical analysis of the present, trends and structures of general developments are explained and some selected aspects (development of living standards and associated challenges, resource and energy use, demography, migration, climate change, conflicts, catastrophes, etc.) are discussed in more depth.

The lecture is principally open for all those interested. But whoever wants to regularly finish it, has to enrol regularly.
Students from programs other than economics, especially from sociology, political science and history, are explicitly welcome due to the interdisciplinary character of the course. In these cases, enrolment for the VU is also necessary online, later enrolment in person will only be possible in exceptional cases in the first unit.

- SDG 11 - Sustainable cities and communities: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.
- SDG 12 - Responsible consumption and production: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.
- SDG 13 - Climate action: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts by regulating emissions and promoting developments in renewable energy.
- SDG 14 - Life below water: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
- SDG 15 - Life on land: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.
- SDG 16 - Peace, justice and strong institutions: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.
- SDG 17 - Partnerships for the goals: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.
