602041 PS Ethics I
winter semester 2023/2024 | Last update: 20.06.2023 | Place course on memo listBasic knowledge of some of the most important positions in ethics and the ability to reflect them critically.
The proseminar is intended to serve as an introduction to the philosophical discipline of ethics in the form of traditional ethical lines of argumentation, but also to highlight their topicality. We will first deal with some central sections of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, followed by relevant parts of Immanuel Kant's Groundwork and some passages from John Stuart Mill's Utilitarianism. John Rawls' Theory of Justice and Martha Nussbaum's capability approach will be used as reference authors of the current debate, which receive many impulses directly from the classical texts and proceed from them in a productive way. It will also be important to establish a link to concrete moral issues in order to make clear whether and to what extent these approaches can inform decision-making processes in current moral conflicts.
Participants will receive a detailed semester plan in the first unit of the course.
The documents for the course will be discussed weekly and published in OLAT.
