winter semester 2023/2024 | Last update: 09.10.2023 | Place course on memo listIn this course, we will consider how language is a way of representing the world and how we use and make conscious choices regarding both lexis and grammar when making and communicating meaning. Through an examination of a broad range of written texts, we will explore how grammar functions in a variety of contexts. In addition to this analytical approach to formal and functional grammar, we will also focus on text production skills, and you will have the opportunity to hone your writing skills in different genres, styles, and for different social purposes.
● Writing & what makes good writing
● Review of key grammar metalanguage (describing language)
● How to conduct a detailed, language-focussed, and contextually sensitive analysis of texts
● Consideration of how texts operate in sociocultural contexts
● Developing awareness of genre & register
● Comparing formal, functional, and cognitive approaches to grammar
● Creative Writing
Discussion of various aspects of language and in-class analysis of texts. This analysis will focus on a variety of texts with different purposes and genres, as well as texts you produce based on a variety of writing prompts.

Writing Project (30%)
Weekly assignments developed into a portfolio (50%)
