winter semester 2023/2024 | Last update: 10.06.2023 | Place course on memo listThe main objective of the course is to provide you an introduction to Gender Studies, including historical, political and sociological aspects; then we will discuss gender in the context of translation and translation studies. Finally you will be able to use adequate gender strategies in texts and to discuss gender topics on an academic level (also in contacts with future clients!). Of course, we will also deal with the role of translators as professionnals who can influence the language and texts towards a more gender-equal society.
Discussion of information that concerns different cultures and languages as well as specific analysis of German and Austrian German/language policies in Germany and Austria. We will also deal with the question how language can create inclusion or exclusion and how language modifies our way of thinking and as a consequence the realities ou our life. We will put the results of this work in the context of translation studies to allow you a) to exerce your future professionnal activity in the field of language or culture transfer as well as language and culture counselling with the convenient fundaments of knowledge and sensibility in the field of gender and b) to be aware of your future role as a culture/language professionnal in the context of creating societal processes towards more diversity.
Lecture, discussions, reading at home; autonomous work on different tasks;
Your final grades will be based on 2 grades (you can choose two of the following three tasks): a) delivering a presentation (with slides and handout) about a topic concerning language or texts within the broad field of gender, b) writing a book review (concerning a book that speaks about aspects of gender in the field of texts, translation, languages) or b) writing an essay (free choice of subject, but respect of typical conventions of an essay).
Will be communicated during our lessons.
