613181 UE Simultaneous Interpreting I German-English (from Language A into Language B)
winter semester 2023/2024 | Last update: 07.02.2024 | Place course on memo listThis course aims to teach students the necessary skills required to simultaneously interpret simple speeches from German into English. Particular emphasis will be placed on accuracy of content and language.
Simultaneous interpreting of simple speeches (both live and via video), exercises to develop the skills required for simultaneous interpreting (shadowing, etc.), analysis of interpretations.
Students will interpret relatively short speeches (8-12 minutes) on one of two topics that will be addressed throughout the term. As well as interpreting, students will be expected to prepare and hold speeches themselves. Each speech will be followed by an analysis session to discuss any difficulties and develop ways to solve these.
The final grade will be made up of several individual grades awarded on the basis of a portfolio. Students must analyse several of their interpretations during the course of the term and hand in written analyses. These written analyses form the portfolio.
Literature will be communicated via OLAT as and when necessary. One book that is definitely recommended is: Jones, Roderick: "Conference Interpreting Explained" (146 pages), 2002
Students must have completed the Bachelor in order to attend this course. Moreover, students should have excellent listening comprehension skills in German and be very comfortable speaking English.
Students may not miss more than two lectures during the course of the term.
