This course aims to teach students the necessary skills required to consecutively interpret simple speeches from German into English. Particular emphasis will be placed on accuracy of content and language.

Consecutive interpreting of simple speeches, exercises to develop the individual skills required for consecutive interpreting (memory training, note-taking, rhetorical skills, etc.), analysis of interpretations.

At the start of term we will focus on training the individual skills required for consecutive interpreting. Towards the middle of term we will then move on to interpreting relatively short speeches consecutively using notes. As well as interpreting, students will be expected to prepare and hold speeches. Each speech will be followed by a discussion session to analyse any problems encountered and develop solutions for these.

The final grade will be made up of several individual grades awarded on the basis of a portfolio. Students must analyse several of their interpretations during the course of the term and hand in written analyses. These written analyses form the portfolio.

Literature will be communicated via OLAT as and when necessary. One book that is definitely recommended is: Gillies, Andrew: "Note-Taking for Consecutive Interpreting" (239 pages), 2005

Students must have completed the Bachelor in order to attend this course. Moreover, students should have excellent listening comprehension skills in German and be very comfortable speaking English. Basic knowledge of the note-taking technique for consecutive interpreting will be an advantage.

Students may not miss more than two lectures during the course of the term.
