At the end of the course, students should be able to explain and describe:

  • the major grammatical forms and functions in English are;
  • how a well-formed English sentence is constructed from words and phrases;
  • the major semantic roles in English are;
  • the nature of lexicon (e.g. what it contains, how it is structured, what is lexical meaning);
  • the lexical structure of English words and phrases, lexical meaning is;

This module is designed to help students enhance their understanding of the structure of English in a systematic and academic way. Basic knowledge of grammatical constructions, semantic structures and lexical meaning is essential for students to move on the next stages. This knowledge will help students understand the creative nature of our linguistic knowledge.
