Students acquire the instruments for understanding and evaluating different sources and media. They use their competences in critical use of media and sources and are able to use their source-critical skills for developing own questions.

The development of letterpress printing with movable type to market maturity by Johannes Gutenberg of Mainz around 1450 is one of the great media revolutions of the late Middle Ages. Even if printing and the written book existed side by side in the early days, the long-term consequences of the invention are difficult to overestimate. The course will deal with the technology of printing itself as well as with the first printing workshops in Germany and Europe and, of course, with the first printed books themselves. At least one teaching unit is to take place in the Innsbruck University Library. A short excursion to the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz is also planned during the semester.

Frontal teaching, common reading and editing of charters; homeworks.
