in this lecture we will deal with gender relations in rural communities from the 16th to the 19th century. We will analyse different sources and research literature and, as guide and inspiration, we will study an exactly 40-year-old classic of micro history and gender studies - Natalie Zemon Davis' "The Return of Martin Guerre". We will read this book chapter by chapter and discuss its relevance to today's women's history and gender history.
