The focus of the course is on learning the basic concepts of programming and methods for solving computer science problems, especially with applications in the engineering and natural sciences. With an introduction to the Python programming language, the writing of computer programs for practical problems and the underlying data structures and algorithms are discussed.
Topics covered include the basics of programming, i.e., instructions, variables, control structures as well as functions, on the one hand, and concepts of practical computer science, such as computer-aided generation of graphics, formulation and implementation of algorithms, event-oriented programming, structured analysis and classification of large data sets, among others, on the other hand.
Lectures in combination with exercises (VU) for hands-on training on concrete tasks for learning the basic concepts of programming and methods for solving computer science problems, which are motivated and discussed in the course of interactive lectures by the instructors.
Continuous assessment through regular written and oral contributions.
The literature to be used as an optional supplement to the VU will be discussed during the first lecture.
Tobias Antensteiner welcomes organizational and content-related questions regarding the course.
