ENGL 2090 investigates a specific topic in Language and Literature. This course focuses on reading, evaluation, and discussion of the selected writers, works, and literary topics. This course serves as an introduction to literary analysis and/or linguistics and contains a suitable amount of assigned texts for a 2000-level General Education Literature course. It is intended to deepen students’ understanding of the topic and enhance analysis and critical thinking skills.

This specific ENGL 2090 class is designed to provide students in all majors with an exposure to a wide cross-section of literary genres and how the influences of World War II can be seen through those genres. We will examine the forms and techniques of these genres with a focus on themes, motifs and settings. We will examine major historical and social contexts, and find resonances of these genres within our own lives and times.  By the end of the course, students should be able to:

-          analyze a text critically through close readings of the texts, with an understanding not only of what the text says, but how it relates to broader themes

-          recognize, understand, and use literary terms that refer to issues of narration, philosophy, plot, theme, motifs and setting

-          use literary language to communicate that understanding in writing, in class discussions, and in group workshops

-          connect these literary genres with issues in contemporary American life to demonstrate its relevancy

This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to the many ways that World War II has been portrayed and referenced in a broad range of literary genres. Our texts will focus on both the historic and cultural influences of WWII on gender, political, and racial attitudes, and society in general, moving from the Modern to the Post-Modern era. The range of literary genres will include the Graphic Novel / Memoir, the Short Story, the Satiric Novel / Film and a Science Fiction / War Novel mash-up. We will also be analyzing other visual and historical texts.

The University of New Orleans International Summer School program has a mandatory class attendance policy. All students are required to attend class for all morning classes and any required afternoon and/or weekend fields trips and lectures. No unexcused absences are allowed. However, LFU students who have to miss a UNO class due to LFU examinations in the first two weeks of our program, can receive one excused absence for this. Any further unexcused absences will result in an academic penalty. Each faculty member determines the penalty for missed classes. Most professors deduct a letter grade for each additional missed class day. For details, please refer to your course syllabi, which will be distributed on the first day of class. The listed ECTS credits are a recommendation by the University of New Orleans Innsbruck Summer School, based on contact hours, anticipated out-of-classroom requirements such as field trips, and projected workload for readings, assignments, and exam preparation.
