Students will be competent to prepare and lead bibliologues. To this end, by the end of this course they will:

  • become familiar with bibliologue and the specifics of staging processes, experienced them as participants, and tried them out in leadership,
  • acquired the theoretical background of bibliologue (midrash, textual hermeneutics, preconditions for the role of leadership, role of the congregation or group, plural sense of scripture and plural form of proclamation),
  • master the central steps and basic techniques in the bibliologue (echoing and interviewing, text selection, preparation of a bibliologue, prologue, introduction and epilogue),
  • be able to recognize and implement the deconstructivist potential in the bibliologue with regard to sermons and other forms of proclamation.

The bibliologue, a form of creative Bible work developed by the North American bibliodramatist Peter Pitzele and his wife Susan, represents a form of proclamation that is concerned with bringing the plural scriptural meaning of texts into common speech. Explicitly as a sermon, but also in other proclamation contexts, the bibliologue is now used primarily in the Protestant - and increasingly also in the Catholic - sphere. Independently of this, however, the bibliological approach to biblical texts can also be usefully employed in sermon preparation.

The course aims to introduce this relatively new form of preaching, the bibliologue, and to test and reflect on it in a common practical setting.

Bibliologue is about a certain way of actively discovering and experiencing biblical stories and their relevance for questions of life today. The participants put themselves in the place of biblical figures and, in identifying them, respond to questions that the biblical texts raise but do not directly answer. These "blanks" in the text are filled with the participants' own life experiences, so that biblical history and life history interweave and interpenetrate each other. At the same time, in this intensive engagement with a text, deep structures of the biblical stories ("hidden stories") can come to light and unfold their impact.
