  • familiarity with current theoretical approaches in functional linguistics
  • ability to analyze specific languages within the framework of Construction Grammar

The class is dedicated to Construction Grammar (XG), a current highly influential framework of linguistic analysis that combines corpus-based methodology with cognitively informed views on language. According to Construction Grammar, the basic unit of linguistic knowledge of speakers is a "construction", which can be a single word, a morpheme, a morphological pattern, a sentence type, and more. The grammar emerges as a network of relations between the different constructions: a "constructicon". We will explore the language structure from the XG perspective and practice analysis methods and principles on real data.
