Students have basic knowledge of theoretical approaches and research perspectives in linguistic politeness research and can discuss them critically. They are able to find a research question in this field of research and have methodological skills in the empirical study of relational communication, of polite and impolite linguistic behavior in Romance languages.

We will deal with a subfield of linguistic pragmatics, with politeness research and their application to Romance languages. We will first deal with some fundamental questions of linguistic politeness. What is politeness? How can it be defined? Are there cultural differences in the understanding of politeness? How can polite and impolite linguistic behavior be explained in a theoretical framework? The concepts and theories will then be applied to specific communication situations chosen by the students. Both oral (e.g. talk shows, counseling sessions) and written communication situations (e.g. business letters, communication in internet forums, on WhatsApp or the like) will be of interest. We will deal with the Romance languages French, Italian and Spanish and their respective cultures as well as with German as a comparative language.
