611532 SE Film History: Women Filmmakers in Romance-speaking countries
summer semester 2024 | Last update: 15.04.2024 | Place course on memo listIntroduction to Gender and Film, women pioneers of cinema, film analysis of selected female directors from Italy, France and Spain.
It was not until 2010 that the first Oscar for best director went to a woman, namely Kathrin Bigelow for The Hurt Locker (2008). But even if the film industry is male-dominated, there have always been female filmmakers, even in Romania. It is precisely the diversity of perspectives - including gender perspectives - that we owe a new perspective on being female or male. We are interested in filmmakers who have taken a feminist approach to traditional gender constructs, such as Agnès Varda, Lina Wertmüller, Alice Rohrwacher, Icíar Bollaíns and Céline Sciamma.
The seminar consists of a theoretical and historical first part, in which we will work on the basics of gender-equitable film analysis, deal with sexism in cinema and with pioneering women in film. In the second part, you can then apply what you have learned to your own film analysis - for example of films by the above-mentioned directors.
Face-to-face and interactive teaching, project work
It is possible to do an academic video essay instead of a seminar paper.
