Acquisition of skills for dealing with historic sources and studies critically, as well as the competence to present the newly-gained knowledge verbally and/or in writing; Acquisition of the competence to apply methods of auxiliary sciences.

By discussing various examples the class will introduce methodological approaches of paleography and the study of charters.

Heraldry is the study of coats of arms and their use. The design of coats of arms, the way they are used and, where applicable, the legal regulations differ according to space, time, social milieu and, in some cases, indi-vidual institutions. The course offers an introduction to the historical development of the heraldic pheno-menon, to the art of heraldry and to heraldic law, with a special focus on the Old Tyrolean region.
