Acquisition of advanced knowledge of selected topics of epochs and scientific discussion thereof.

Originating from a dynasty of counts based in the Upper Rhine region and present-day Switzerland, the Habsburgs first came into possession of the Roman-German royal dignity under Rudolf I in the late 13th century and since then - alongside the Luxembourgs and Wittelsbachs - have been one of the families that fought for the German royal crown in the late Middle Ages. From the election of Albrecht II in 1438 until the end of the Old Empire in 1806, apart from one exception, only members of this family were elected king or emperor. What accounts for the "success" of this family? Were there certain specific features of the ruling practice? How did the division of power affect the continued existence of the dynasty? Who - apart from King Rudolf - were the great protagonists of the dynasty? What role did women play for the Habsburgs? How did the saying 'Others may wage wars, you happy Austria marry' come about? What does the formula AEIOU mean? These are some of the fascinating questions that the course will explore?
