Scholarship of recent decades has interpreted transatlantic slavery during the modern era as a system that fundamentally impacted the development of various continents and the relationships between them, as well as the lives of millions of people. Slavery existed in one form or another on all continents, but with the close connections between the regions surrounding the Atlantic Ocean, transatlantic slavery differs from other "slaveries" in terms of quantity and quality.
In this proseminar, different facets of transatlantic slavery will be examined. It deals with individual actors, stakeholders and organizations as well as the specific characteristics of slavery in different regions. We will investigate various practices of enslavement, examine the attribution and construction of "race" and the impact of this classification on the organization of societies that were politically, socially and economically dependent on slavery. Moreover, we will discuss the relationship between religion and slavery.
Within the framework of the proseminar, students are required to develop a research question and discuss it both in an oral presentation and in a written paper that complies with academic quality criteria.
