Acquisition of basic skills for dealing with historic sources and presentations in Economic and Social History as well as skills in presenting the newly acquired knowledge orally as well as in writing. Acquisition of basic knowledge and application of relevant methods aiding scientific research.

Transport and mobility are essential factors in modern times. As a pass country, Tyrol has always played an important role in transport in Europe. Transport and mobility form a cross-sectional topic that has numerous references to political, economic, social, environmental and technological history, as well as to other disciplines such as geography, sociology, economics, ecology, architecture and spatial planning. This introductory seminar focuses primarily on individual transport and in particular on the automobile in the state of Tyrol in the 20th century. The topics are not only the car as a status symbol, but also the environment of automobilization: the construction of the infrastructure (roads, gas stations, sales operations) as well as the economic, social and societal effects and consequences of automobilization.

Input presentations of the teacher, group work, discussion of literature, oral and written presentations.

Course with continuous performance assessment: attendance at all sessions, regular and active participation in discussions, readings and short assignments, oral presentation and written paper with a volume of 30,000-37,500 characters (approx. 12-15 pages).

Basic reading:

Christoph Maria Merki, transport history and mobility (UTB 3025), Stuttgart 2008.

The participants must find the other literature for thematic fields independently and consciously, crossing subdisciplines, and prepare it for discussion.
