Students gain an overview of different areas of cultural work using the European Capital of Culture programme as an example. They will meet people and institutions involved in cultural studies and gain insights into different professional fields. They reflect critically on the objectives of the programme (e.g. Europeanisation, sustainable development, tourism) and the realities of its implementation.

In 2024, the city of Bad Ischl and the Salzkammergut will be the European Capital of Culture and Cultural Region. The Austrian Departments of European Ethnology/Cultural Analysis have been on site several times and have ethnographically analysed the preparation processes. The excursion now takes us to Bad Ischl during the Capital of Culture year 2024, where we will look at how the concepts of the European Capital of Culture were implemented, which actors are involved and how the diverse offers are accepted by the city and its various stakeholders.

The excursion will be organised jointly with the Institute for Cultural Analysis (University of Klagenfurt). We will take part in the European Capital of Culture programme on site, but also take a look behind the scenes and meet the organising team, external project managers, local residents and business people. Guiding questions will be how the planning and promises in the Capital of Culture process were organised, who has which agendas and how participation can be successful for all interested parties. Additional attention will be paid to the topics of Europeanisation, a central mission of the Capital of Culture programme, as well as questions of tourism development and sustainability.

Organisation: The excursion will take place from 4-7 June 2024, beforehand we will meet online together with students from the University of Klagenfurt to prepare (26.4., 17.5., 24.5. 10.15-11.45h). More information under notes.

Preparatory reading and introductory lectures on the Capital of Culture programme, on-site participation in the programme, visits to exhibitions, meetings with experts, perceptual walks.

Active participation, in-depth input in a preparatory session and on the excursion, written excursion report on a self-selected focus afterwards.

The excursion will take place from 4-7 June 2024, beforehand we will meet online together with students from the University of Klagenfurt to prepare (26.4., 17.5., 24.5. 10.15-11.45h). Accommodation is in the youth hostel Bad Ischl (approx. 35 euros per night in a shared room). The arrival and return journey will be made independently, we can organise car pools in advance. A subsidy from the StV is being sought and is planned.
