By studying classical and recent literature, the students will gain a solid understanding of important aspects of the theory of strongly continuous operator semigroups and the application to linear and non-linear evolution problems

This research seminar offers the opportunity to present one's own research results, or explore and present a current topic of functional analysis.

This semester we will concentrate on elegant  matematical arguments, mainly in geometry, combinatorics, and algorithms. For example: Every bounded subset A of the plane can be split into 3 pieces of diameter strictly smaller than that of A. On the contrary, if  the dimension d is large enough, then there is a bounded subset of a d-dimesnional Euclidian space can NOT be partitioned into d+1 sets of smaller diameter.

Only a modest background in analysis, linear algerbra and graph theory will be assumed. We will study selected chapters of  the books "Proofs from the Book" by Aigner and Ziegler and  "Thirty-three Miniatures" by  Jiri Matousek. Both books are available electronically in the university library.
