Using practical examples, students learn how the process from microorganism to biotechnologically used products can take place. The laboratory-based experiments are supplemented by data-based analyzes, which give the students an insight into “bioprospecting”

Microbial metabolic products play an important role in medicine (e.g. antibiotics) and industry (e.g. detergent enzymes) and have become an integral part of our lives. Microbially produced products are of economic value, which is why research into these metabolites is a constantly growing field. The identification, characterization and isolation of the desired metabolic products of various microorganisms is the basis for the development of new active substances and new materials. In this course the path from the organism via the gene to the biotechnologically valuable product is shown by using practical examples. The aim of this course is to simulate the process of identifying biotechnologically relevant metabolites from organism to production scale. Laboratory work is supplemented with bioinformatic analyzes. This provides insights into the basics of classic, laboratory-based methods, but also into data-driven methods for finding biotechnologically relevant genes.
