The students know the theological and canon law foundations of the Catholic understanding of marriage. They can independently declare the conditions for validity (marital capacity, marriage will and form of marriage) and clearly distinguish them from the conditions for permissibility. They know how a marriage can be dissolved, annulled or validated. The topics of separation of spouses, legal status of divorced and remarried persons, marriage in state law as well as interdenominational marriages can be presented with regard to their canon law aspects.

Contents of the lecture are the theological and legal foundations of marriage and its preparation. The conditions for a valid marriage (capacity to marry,
marriage will and the form of marriage) are particularly taken into account. Separation of spouses, divorce and annulment are also the subject of the lecture. The legal status of divorced and remarried, interconfessional marriages and marriage in the national legal system are treated in the same way.
