winter semester 2024/2025 | Last update: 25.09.2025 | Place course on memo listStudents acquire the ability to characterise the fundamentals of empirical studies. They can assign the most important qualitative and quantitative survey methods to the respective scientific-theoretical and methodological background and decide which research questions require which methods. They are able to critically evaluate existing empirical studies and independently carry out the first phases of a research process (formulation of a research question, data collection, method reflection) qualitatively and/or quantitatively or using method triangulation.
Short description: This course gives an overview of qualitative and quantitative research methods in the social sciences. Students learn basic concepts and approaches in each method and its scientific backgrounds. Learning targets: - Understand how to link theoretical concepts and empirical research - Become acquainted with the practical research process (specifying a research question, choosing an adequate research design, collecting, analyzing and interpreting data). - Be able to collect data using standard research methods (surveys, interviews, observations, focus groups).
