Skills for critical examination and presentation of essential methods and strategies in Media Studies applied to a concrete example.

In this seminar, we will examine how artificial intelligence (AI) is portrayed in the media. We will analyze different multimodal media formats such as news, documentaries and other articles that address AI technologies and look for overarching discursive patterns in the contributions. The aim is to understand the social and ethical implications of these discourses and to assess their impact on the public perception of AI.

In the course, we will familiarize ourselves with the relevant research literature and various methodological approaches (linguistic discourse analysis, corpus linguistic approaches, image and multimodal analyses), deal with questions of data collection and corpus formation and analyze individual media contributions as examples. The aim is to develop their own projects. The research process is continuously accompanied by the students in the seminar and worked on at specific points in work assignments, from the first sketch to the literature research and the writing of an exposé to the preparation of the seminar paper, which is continuously accompanied during the seminar.
