Competence to reflect on selected topics in German studies in a professionally sound and theory-guided manner, and to independently relate them to each other; highly specialized knowledge of Germanic content and methods in relation to exemplary areas of work in German studies

In the course, we explore various aspects of the relationship between (non-human) animals and humans, as far as these aspects have found expression in the German language and German-language discourses. This includes, for example, questions of vocabulary (such as how the same biological processes are named depending on whether they relate to animals or humans) or discourse-linguistic topics (such as how the relationship between [non-human] animals and humans is treated in different media). We will gain insights into primarily linguistic subareas of Human-Animal Studies.

Lecture, (preparatory) reading and discussion of research literature, presentations and completion of exercises

Oral and written: participation in the course, (preparatory) reading and written answers to questions on research literature, completion of assignments, development of a research topic with presentation and exercises.

For students who wish to have the VU recognised as a seminar, a short presentation of the research project and a written seminar paper are compulsory in addition to participation in the course.

To be announced in the course

Students of the Master's degree program in German as a teaching subject can have the VU credited as SE Specialization in German Studies (PM 2/3) - please note the examination mode!
