608750 SE Research Seminar I: Diu Crône - Concepts of Alterity
winter semester 2024/2025 | Last update: 02.10.2024 | Place course on memo listThe aim of this course is to enable students to independently grasp and understand the content of a Middle High German text, to work on it methodically and theoretically, and to develop and refine their own questions about the primary text.
In this research seminar, we will work intensively on Heinrich von dem Türlin's main work “Diu Crône”. The concept of “alterity” will be at the center of our reading from various perspectives and will not only include the otherness of the medieval narrative world and the inventory of characters, but will also deal with the handwritten book in its materiality. In the course of the semester, we will read the primary text together and work on individual thematic blocks (these will be discussed in more detail at the beginning of the semester), which aim to understand the text as a product of its time, but to think about it further and to ensure a literary, linguistic and cultural-historical discussion that also shows the relevance of this exciting text from the early 13th century for the reality of our lives.
Prerequisites for successful completion of the course are active participation in the individual sessions, the completion of small work assignments, short presentations of own analyses and the writing of a seminar paper.
Primary text and translation: Heinrich von dem Türlin: Diu Crône. Critical Middle High German reading edition with explanatory notes. Edited by Gudrun Felder 2012. Heinrich von dem Türlin: Die Krone. Translated into Modern High German by Florian Kragl 2012 with the collaboration of Alfred Ebenbauer. Further relevant literature will be announced at the beginning of the course.
