609718 SE English Literature and Culture: Of Rags and Riches: (Mis)Representations of Poverty and Wealth
winter semester 2024/2025 | Last update: 21.10.2024 | Place course on memo listParticipants will practice a critical and analytical engagement with representations of wealth and poverty in different media and learn to apply theoretical models and explanations of social difference and injustice.
The subject of our inquiry will be different visual and verbal (in other words, artistic and literary) representations of the opposite extremes of poverty and wealth ("rags and riches"). We will discuss the curious appeal of both and the emotions that depictions of destitution on the one hand, of abundance on the other can trigger as well as the kinds of narratives that ensue from their affective potential.
Short presentations and class discussions, reading, research and writing assignments
continuous assessment of participation in class discussions, presentations, written assignments, seminar paper in the assessemnt of which special focus will be placed on the detail, originality, logical consistency, argumentative skill, use of primary material. This will, of course be practised in class.
