Acquisition of skills for a critical handling of historical sources and descriptions in Austrian History and of an adequate competence in presenting this knowledge in written and oral form

From the 16th/17th to the 20th century, church registers were the place where the most important personal details were recorded: Birth, marriage and death. These church registers have already been digitised in many places and therefore enable a wide range of research and analyses in an easily accessible form: for example, we can obtain information about birth rates, naming habits, kinship and acquaintance networks, marriage patterns and causes of death. The course will focus on how this information can be linked, processed and interpreted.

Discussions and practical training based on literature and source material, short interactive presentations by the students.

Regular attendance (course immanent to the examination with compulsory attendance), participation in discussions, interactive presentation, short written paper.

Will be announced in class.
