This advanced course is dedicated for guiding Students to scientific observations. The goal is to lead towards instument knowledge, data reduction and preperation of scientific reports. The "optional course" (Bachelor) "Praktische Astronomie für MIP" or simmilar education should be attended before.

Observation planning, CCD direct imaging, stellar spectroscopy, data analysis, preparation of scientific papers and publication. The course must be held in blocks, depending on the weather. A willingness to be flexible is therefore required. It is only possible in the winter semester due to the length of the nights.

As the course depends on weather we are on "stand-by" on several days of the week - decison is made often only during the afternoon.

Assessment based on regular oral and written contributions from the participants. The written part includes observation protocols during the observation nights, and a data evaluation protocol, which must be submitted no later than 4 weeks after the respective observation nights associated with these data.

Completed course "Praktische Astronomie" or comparable training - "Datenverarbeitung" or "Laborpraktikum Astrophysik" is desirable.

Mandatory preperation discussion and first course date Th 3.10.2024 11:00 room 8/35.

If you are unable to attend for justified reasons, please contact the course leaders IN ADVANCE.

Further dates, time and place by arrangement.

We first have a few blocks (dates to be agreed) in the computer room of the institute for basic training and one block during the day for an introduction to the devices.

Then there will be blocks in the evening and at night, depending on the weather.

Finally, there will be blocks in the computer room to evaluate and process your data by arrangement - but mainly self-study.

Part 1 (basics of instruments and CCD up to imaging and photometry) and part 2 (spectroscopy) take place one after the other and build on each other.
