Students have the opportunity to recognize and understand the role and function of microorganisms in the context of climate change. Microorganisms are omnipresent in our environment and influence all processes that take place on earth. In this course, students receive an overview of the direct influence (e.g. influencing material cycles) and the indirect influence (such as symbioses, which bring advantages when adapting to drought or salinity) of microorganisms on our climate.

The main goal of this excursion is to give students an awareness of the diversity of microorganisms in our environment. During the field trip, students will learn about various aspects of sampling microorganisms (including prokaryotes and eukaryotes) from the environment. Relevant environmental parameters are taken into account, such as soil type, type of cultivation and anthropogenic influence. In practical exercises in the laboratory, students also learn how these samples are processed. A particular focus is on identifying fungi and phytopathogenic microorganisms in the environment. For this purpose, practical identification exercises are also carried out.

During this excursion, the students acquire the knowledge of how to recognize climatic factors that influence microorganisms in the field. On the other hand, the focus is on identifying microorganisms. The following aspects are covered:

1. Metadata for microbial analyses: We are concerned with the collection of geological, climatic and ecological factors that are relevant as metadata for the analysis of microbial communities and the understanding of microbial processes.

2. Sampling and processing: Students learn to take and process samples from different habitats in order to isolate and analyze microorganisms.

3. Recognizing plant-pathogenic microorganisms: In the field, we practice recognizing microorganisms that can damage plants.

4. Biodiversity of large mushrooms: We consider the diversity of large mushrooms in the context of climate change, their biotechnological potential and their usability as edible mushrooms.
