ü Students can enter into dialogue with society about scientific issues
ü They are able to analyze their own and others' assumptions and relate them to one another in a context-specific manner (change of perspective).
ü Students actively try various formats of science communication (participation)
ü Students are able to exchange ideas about scientific topics with colleagues from another areas and develop a differentiated picture by looking at different perspectives.
The course is intended for bachelor's and master's students who, because of their enthusiasm for research content in the field of biology or geography, would like to enter into a dialogue with society. In the course, prospective scientists and teachers will experience in a practical way how to plan and carry out research projects with the involvement of the population.
The possibilities for science communication beyond the boundaries of the university are made tangible. Particular attention is paid to dialogue with representatives from different parts of society. One aspect of the course focuses on citizen science. This offers the opportunity for research in cooperation with non-scientists (e.g. also students, teachers) and thus added value for everyone involved. Creation of a basis of information about the possibilities, advantages, requirements and challenges in dialogue between Science and society.
Via practical examples and active involvement, students experience what is important for communication with society. In addition to a basic introduction to the topic, successful projects are presented, concrete experiences are exchanged, tips and ideas are communicated in order to encourage people to enter the world of citizen science and to provide the opportunity to “tap into” these funding sources in the future.
We deal with various formats of science communication such as science slam, comics, blogs, threads, podcasts, illustrative videos, hands-on workshops but also articles and contributions in newspapers and local media.
Written examination of expertise (technical content), participation in the practical parts, quality of own presentations
Participants are invited to take part in a BEVI survey (Beliefs, Events, and Values Inventory). Participation takes place online before the start and after the course and requires approx. 2x30 min.
A discussion of the BEVI group results will be offered on request, depending on the interest of the participants.
